Luxury Hotel Gyms Worth Packing Your Workout Clothes For

I have a ritual whenever I check into a hotel: I go find the gym. Even if I have no intention of working out that day, I want to see what it’s like. Is it tucked into a windowless room somewhere, or is it a place I might actually look forward to spending an hour?

The good news is that hotel gyms have come a long way. At some luxury hotels, the fitness center has become part of the experience itself—with an overwater gym in the Maldives, Pacific views in Maui and even a workout room overlooking a Major League Baseball field in Denver. Add in serious training equipment, Pilates, yoga and personal coaching, and suddenly working out on vacation doesn’t feel quite so difficult.

These are the hotel gyms that caught my attention—and might actually make you want to work out on vacation.

Vakkaru Maldives | Maldives

There are ocean-view gyms, and then there is the Overwater Fitness Center at Vakkaru Maldives. Suspended above the lagoon, the 24-hour gym puts the water directly beneath and around you, so a morning workout comes with crystalline views and the occasional glimpse of marine life below.

The setting may be the first thing you notice, but this isn't a case of scenery making up for a bare-bones fitness room. The gym is equipped for cardio, strength and functional training, making it possible to maintain a real workout routine while you're on the island.

Vakkaru also gives guests plenty of reasons to exercise outside the gym. A beachside yoga pavilion hosts sunrise flows and private sessions, while two floodlit tennis courts offer coaching through the Tipsarevic Luxury Tennis program. There's also padel, beach volleyball and a football pitch. Still, it's hard to imagine many places where a treadmill has a better view.

Hotel Wailea | Maui, Hawaii

If you're going to exercise indoors while you're in Maui, this is a convincing place to do it. Hotel Wailea's open-air Fitness Studio sits on the resort's lush hillside with 180-degree views across the Pacific, giving the 24-hour space a distinctly different feel from the typical enclosed hotel gym.

The adults-only Relais & Châteaux property has outfitted the studio with Technogym and PENT equipment as well as a Peloton bike, so the workout itself doesn't take a back seat to the scenery.

What makes Hotel Wailea especially interesting is what happens after the workout. Its Vitality Menu takes a decidedly modern approach to recovery with options including photobiomodulation red-light therapy, infrared PEMF therapy, Theragun PRO Plus percussive therapy, JetBoots lymphatic drainage and Therabody Smart Goggles. For travelers who take both training and recovery seriously, it's a thoughtful combination.

Amanpulo | Philippines

At Amanpulo, staying active feels very much a part of the island experience. The resort’s fitness center is equipped with state-of-the-art cardio machines and fixed and free weights, with expert instructors available for personal training. Dedicated yoga and meditation studios, along with a separate Pilates studio, offer more options indoors, while the Jungle Trail obstacle course takes the workout outside into the island’s tropical landscape.

Recovery is equally well considered. Two steam rooms and a cold plunge pool make it easy to build contrast therapy into a post-workout routine, while private suites with open-air verandas offer a quiet place to unwind. A private infrared sauna rounds out a fitness experience that extends well beyond the workout itself.

Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol | Los Cabos, Mexico

At Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol, the gym feels like part of the landscape. Sweeping views of the Baja coastline and an indoor-outdoor design keep the ocean in sight, whether you're lifting weights, stretching or settling in for a longer training session.

Designed with input from celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, the fitness center combines serious equipment with an unusually broad roster of classes and private instruction. Guests can choose from Pilates, yoga, spin and boot camp or explore offerings such as energetic breathwork and active meditation.

The fitness center's location adjacent to the spa makes it especially easy to build recovery into the experience. It’s a good example of where luxury hotel fitness is heading: less separation between training, recovery and wellness.

The Rally Hotel | Denver, Colorado

The view from the cardio equipment at The Rally Hotel isn't an ocean or mountain range. It's Coors Field—and that's exactly what makes this gym so much fun.

The hotel's 24-hour Skybridge Fitness Center overlooks the home of the Colorado Rockies, giving guests a direct view into the ballpark while they run, ride or work out. In a world of hotel gyms that can begin to look remarkably similar, the sense of place here is hard to miss.

Afterward, head upstairs to the rooftop plunge pool, where the perspective shifts from the ballpark to the Denver skyline and Rocky Mountains. It's a hotel fitness experience that could really only exist in Denver.

Cali Mykonos | Mykonos, Greece

On Mykonos' quieter eastern coast, Cali Mykonos has created The Athletic Club as the centerpiece of its new Terra Wellness Club.

The fully equipped gym and functional training studio are naturally cooled by the island's meltemi winds, bringing the outdoors directly into the workout

What sets Cali apart, though, is how intentionally movement and recovery have been connected. The resort's Arrival Reset, for example, combines movement, massage and red-light therapy to help guests recover from travel. Contrast therapy, along with new padel and pickleball courts overlooking the Aegean, rounds out a wellness program designed for guests who don't necessarily want to stop moving simply because they're on vacation.

The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay | Oʻahu, Hawaii

With 1,180 acres and five miles of coastline on Oʻahu's North Shore, The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay has plenty of ways to keep moving outdoors. But its 24-hour oceanfront fitness center makes a surprisingly strong case for taking your workout indoors.

State-of-the-art equipment faces expansive Pacific views, bringing the North Shore into the workout rather than shutting it outside. Guests who prefer more structure can book personal training or choose from Barre, Spin, Pilates Reformer and sunset yoga.

That variety feels particularly well suited to Turtle Bay. You can put in a serious gym session one morning, take Pilates the next and spend another day moving outside along one of Hawaii’s most dramatic stretches of coastline.

The New Luxury of a Great Hotel Gym

For years, hotels and resorts have treated the gym as something guests might need rather than somewhere they might actually want to spend time. This has dramatically changed.

What I like most about these spaces isn't simply the quality of the equipment. It's that they feel connected to the destination You can watch marine life beneath you in the Maldives, look into Coors Field in Denver, feel the Mykonos breeze or watch the Pacific while you work out in Hawaii,

For travelers who consider movement part of feeling good—not something they leave behind when they go on vacation—a great gym has become one more thing worth checking before booking.
