The Season to Slow Down: 5 Luxury Fall Wellness Escapes

From golden aspens in Santa Fe and harvest season in Napa Valley to crisp days on a Montana ranch, these five luxury escapes make a compelling case for a wellness-focused fall getaway.

Fall has always been my favorite time of year to travel. There is something about the shift in season that makes slowing down feel a little easier. Cooler temperatures invite longer walks and mornings outside, harvest season changes what’s on the table, and in many destinations, the landscape alone is reason enough to plan a trip.

The best fall wellness escapes make the most of the season. At these five hotels and resorts, wellness might mean spending a crisp day hiking or horseback riding in Montana, exploring golden aspens outside Santa Fe, starting the morning with yoga by the Maine coast or booking a grape-inspired spa ritual during Napa's harvest. And for travelers who would rather extend summer than embrace sweater weather, there is a Florida retreat with an entire three-story sanctuary devoted to wellness.

Paws Up Montana | Greenough, Montana

Set across 37,000 acres about 35 miles from Missoula, Paws Up Montana is a place where wellness happens naturally. It might mean exploring more than 100 miles of trails—whether on horseback, by bike or on foot—casting for trout in the Blackfoot River or trying something entirely new, like a cattle drive or ATV adventure. Traditional wellness is part of the mix, too, from sound bath meditation and mindful movement to restorative spa treatments. But some of the most interesting experiences are less expected. Horse Whispering uses patience, awareness and trust to build a connection between guest and horse, while Trout Whispering turns fly fishing into a quieter, more intentional experience on the water.

That approach feels especially fitting in fall, when being outdoors is the main event. At Paws Up, wellness doesn’t necessarily require a spa treatment, a sauna—or even an agenda. Sometimes it’s simply time spent outside finding stillness beneath Montana’s Big Sky.

Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi | Santa Fe, New Mexico

Fall may be one of the best times to experience Santa Fe. Summer’s heat gives way to cooler days, aspens turn gold in the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the city's already impressive food scene celebrates the season with the annual Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta.

Just steps from the Plaza, the 58-room Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi puts much of Santa Fe within easy reach. The adobe hotel is filled with hand-carved doors, local textiles and Native American art, while seasonal menus at Anasazi Restaurant showcase New Mexico's fall harvest.

Days can be as active—or unhurried—as you want. Explore Canyon Road and the Santa Fe River Trail by e-bike, hike in the surrounding high desert or venture farther afield to Chimayó, Tsankawi and Ghost Ranch with the hotel's Destination Ambassador. Back at the Inn, massages incorporate Southwestern botanicals, while guests looking for a more extensive spa experience can take the house car to nearby Ten Thousand Waves. Come evening, retreating to a room with a glowing kiva fireplace feels particularly good this time of year.

White Barn Inn, Auberge Collection | Kennebunk, Maine

Few places capture fall quite like Maine, and White Barn Inn pairs the season’s quintessential New England setting with a quieter approach to wellness.

The intimate Kennebunk retreat has just 27 rooms and suites, along with three luxury houseboats, acclaimed dining and Saltwood Spa. Seasonal offerings range from poolside vinyasa to private yoga overlooking the coastline from the roof deck of the Cora Houseboat. Sound baths and mindful movement slow things down further, while coastal walks and crisp fall days make time outside part of the experience. It’s wellness without an overly structured agenda—leaving plenty of time to walk along the coast, settle into the spa and simply enjoy being in Maine during one of its most beautiful seasons.

Napa Valley takes on a different rhythm during harvest, which generally stretches from late August into October. Vineyards buzz with activity, grapes arrive from the fields and the landscape begins its gradual shift toward fall.

Set among the vineyards of St. Helena with views toward neighboring Beringer Winery, Alila Napa Valley puts guests close to that seasonal energy without being in the middle of it. The adults-focused hotel is within walking distance of downtown St. Helena and its tasting rooms, making it easy to balance exploring with downtime.

At Spa Alila, fall makes its way into the treatment menu with the Harvest Cabernet Ritual, a vino-inspired treatment that begins with a grape-seed exfoliation followed by a full-body massage and facial treatment featuring skincare from Be Here Farm + Nature. Naturally, it ends with a glass of Napa Valley Cabernet.

Between seasonal dining at Violetto, mornings overlooking the vines and afternoons exploring wine country, harvest season is reason enough to come to Napa in fall.

Not every fall escape needs changing leaves. For travelers who would rather follow the warmth south, Naples Beach Club, A Four Seasons Resort offers a very different take on fall wellness.

At the heart of its wellness offering is The Sanctuary, a three-level, 30,000-square-foot wellness center that goes well beyond the traditional resort spa. Along with 13 treatment rooms, it includes a rooftop lap pool, a FRAME Pilates studio and a fitness center designed by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

The communal thermal circuit takes guests through aromatherapy steam rooms, a Finnish sauna, an ice room, vitality pools and experience showers. For a more high-tech approach to recovery, the Ammortal Chamber combines molecular hydrogen, vibro-acoustics and multiwave frequencies in a 15-minute session. The treatment menu also includes LPG Endermologie for lymphatic drainage and body sculpting, along with Margy's Monte Carlo facials.

It’s less about embracing fall than escaping it—a warm-weather option for anyone who would rather put their toes in the sand, soak up some Gulf Coast sunshine, fit in a Pilates class and spend an afternoon moving between hot and cold.

What I love most about traveling in fall is that wellness doesn't always have to come with an agenda. Whether that means horseback riding in Montana, walking the coast of Maine or lingering over the vineyards in Napa, these are the kinds of trips that make fall my favorite season to travel.
