The Human Side of Wellness: Lessons From Miraval's Executive Spa Director

An unexpected reunion with Miraval Austin’s Executive Spa Director reveals why kindness, presence, and human connection still matter in an increasingly high-tech wellness world.

Seventeen years ago, I was staying at a resort in Clearwater, Florida, just a week after my mother had passed away. Still grieving, I made an appointment for a massage, hoping for a little time to myself.

My therapist that day was Maureen Viperman.

I remember telling her about my mother's death and becoming emotional during our time together. She was incredibly kind and compassionate. Before I left, she gave me three small stones. I still have them on my bedroom dresser today.

Recently, when I reconnected with Maureen and told her about the stones, she remembered our encounter.

Today, she is the Executive Spa Director at Miraval Austin Resort & Spa, where mindfulness and intentional living are at the heart of the experience. Over the years, she has watched the luxury wellness industry evolve, from traditional spa treatments to increasingly sophisticated approaches to longevity, recovery, and emotional wellbeing.

But what struck me most during our conversation was how little her fundamental philosophy has changed. What I remember from that afternoon in Clearwater isn't the massage itself. It's how she made me feel at a time when I needed kindness most.

As Maureen reminded me, sometimes the most meaningful wellness experiences have very little to do with the treatment.

The Evolution of Luxury Wellness

When Viperman began her career as a massage therapist, spa visits were often viewed as occasional indulgences. Guests came for relaxation, pampering, or an escape from everyday responsibilities.

Today, she sees a very different traveler.

"Guests are arriving with greater awareness and intention," she says. "They're looking for help managing stress, improving sleep, increasing resilience, and creating healthier habits that extend beyond their vacation."

Travelers are also seeking more personalized experiences and practical advice they can incorporate into their daily lives.

Yet despite the growing sophistication of the wellness industry, Viperman believes one fundamental need hasn't changed.

"What hasn't changed is the human desire to slow down and reconnect," she says. "If anything, that's become even more important in our increasingly busy and digitally connected world."

When Simpler Is Better

Luxury wellness has entered an era of longevity diagnostics, sophisticated recovery equipment, biometric testing, and treatments promising measurable results.

Viperman welcomes innovation, particularly when it helps people better understand their health. But she also believes the industry shouldn’t lose sight of the basics.

"Quality sleep, meaningful relationships, movement, time in nature, mindfulness, and human touch still have an extraordinary impact on how we feel," she says.

Her perspective is a reminder that wellness doesn't always require an expensive treatment or an elaborate program. Some of its most valuable elements are readily available, even if we don't always make time for them.

"Sometimes the most transformative wellness experience isn't high-tech at all. It's being fully present, breathing deeply, and giving ourselves permission to slow down."

It's a philosophy that also shapes her view of emerging wellness trends. She's particularly interested in the growing attention being paid to emotional wellbeing, nervous system regulation, recovery, women's health, and sleep.

What excites her is the industry's increasing recognition that physical, mental, and emotional health are interconnected.

What concerns her? The promise of a quick fix.

"Wellness isn't something that happens overnight," she says. "Lasting change usually comes from consistency, self-awareness, and sustainable habits."

Finding Wellness Beyond the Treatment Room

At Miraval Austin, some of the experiences Viperman finds most meaningful don't happen on a massage table.

The resort's mindfulness offerings, equine programs, and reflective activities encourage guests to explore wellbeing in ways they might not have anticipated.

"I've watched guests discover new perspectives, reconnect with themselves, and experience breakthroughs they never anticipated," she says.

Rather than focusing solely on how guests feel during a treatment, Viperman is interested in what they take away from the experience.

A massage might provide an hour of relaxation, but learning to recognize stress, make time for rest, or become more present can influence how someone lives long after returning home.

"At its heart, I believe the philosophy remains the same," she says of Miraval's longstanding emphasis on mindfulness and intentional living.

What has changed is the world guests return to, one filled with constant notifications, competing demands, and fewer opportunities to disconnect.

For Viperman, the goal is to give travelers practical tools they can continue using after their stay.

The Experiences That Stay With Us

Having spent years working in luxury spas, Viperman has experienced wellness traditions in different settings. Interestingly, the ones she remembers most aren't necessarily the most luxurious.

She's drawn to experiences that feel authentic to their surroundings, whether through local healing traditions, connections to nature, or meaningful rituals.

She recently experienced an Ayurvedic ritual that she describes as transformative, both mentally and physically.

"I love when a wellness experience tells a story and creates a genuine sense of place," she says.

In a travel landscape where wellness offerings can sometimes feel interchangeable, her observation is particularly relevant. The experiences that leave a lasting impression often have less to do with elaborate facilities than with a genuine connection to the people, culture and place.

The Rituals She Returns to Every Day

For someone who spends her professional life helping others slow down, Viperman's personal wellness routine is refreshingly simple.

The two practices she never skips, even when traveling, are prayer and breathwork.

"No matter where I am, I can always pause for prayer and a few intentional breaths," she says. "It's a simple practice, but it immediately grounds me and helps me transition from doing to being."

After long days supporting guests and her team, she also makes time to read, walk and write.

Her approach reflects one of the most important pieces of wellness advice she's received: wellbeing isn't a destination or something to accomplish once. It's an ongoing practice.

"I've learned that the small things we do consistently often matter more than the big things we do occasionally," she says.

What Guests Have Taught Her

Of all the lessons Viperman has learned during her career, one stands above the rest.

"I've learned that every person has a story that you cannot see."

Some guests arrive carrying stress or exhaustion. Others are navigating personal challenges that aren't immediately apparent. And sometimes, what they're seeking isn't simply physical relaxation.

"Over the years, I've learned that kindness, presence, and genuine listening can be just as meaningful as any treatment we provide," she says. "Sometimes people arrive seeking relaxation, but what they're really longing for is connection—to feel seen, supported, or understood."

Seventeen years ago, I was one of those guests.

When I asked Maureen what single piece of advice she would give travelers about taking better care of themselves, her answer was simple.

"Give yourself permission to be present. Put down your phone. Close your laptop."

It's advice that seems particularly relevant in a wellness industry increasingly focused on doing more, measuring more, and achieving more.

And perhaps the three small stones I've kept all these years are a reminder of something even simpler: sometimes the most lasting part of a wellness experience is the kindness of the person who cared for you.
