Esperanza: One of Cabo's Best Luxury Wellness Resorts
Years after my first visit, Esperanza has reinvented its spa, elevated its dining, and deepened its wellness focus—without losing the spectacular Baja setting that made it famous.
Perched above the Sea of Cortez, Esperanza has long been one of Cabo's most spectacular luxury resorts. What’s easier to miss is how much the experience has evolved. This is a property where a five-hour Wellness Journey rooted in the Medicine Wheel, a table at the reimagined Cocina del Mar, and an afternoon spent on the golf course or pickleball court all feel like exactly what Esperanza does best—with a Thursday night Mahjong game thrown in for good measure. Esperanza was also recently named to Condé Nast Traveler’s inaugural Triple Crown, a new distinction for hotels that have won all three of the magazine’s flagship honors over the past three decades, and one of only five Auberge Resorts Collection properties worldwide to make the list.
Set on 17 lush acres at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Esperanza sits in a secluded cove between two rocky bluffs—the kind of setting that makes the beach below feel like your own, even though it’s open like every beach in Mexico. Spacious casitas—many with infinity-edge hot tubs on the terrace—still offer that indoor/outdoor living I fell for on my first visit. But today's Esperanza offers a fuller, more layered experience than the one I wrote about years ago, and that range is exactly what makes it worth a closer look.
The Spa, Completely Reimagined
The Spa at Esperanza underwent a full transformation, reopening with an entirely new wellness philosophy rooted in the Medicine Wheel—an ancestral symbol used by Indigenous peoples across the Americas for centuries to represent the four elements: Air, Earth, Water and Fire. The philosophy holds that true wellbeing happens only when all four are in balance, and the new treatment menu, curated by lead therapist Connie Ruiz, is built entirely around that framework.
It starts before you even reach the treatment table. Every visit includes the Pasaje de Agua, a hydrotherapy circuit inspired by the temazcal, or “steam house”—a purification ritual used in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times. You move through a warm-spring soaking pool, traditional steam, and a cool waterfall rinse, which alone would have been worth the trip.
From there, guests can choose a singular treatment or go deeper with one of the new five-hour Wellness Journeys, each one built around a different quadrant of the Medicine Wheel:
• Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) grounds you with a gratitude ceremony, energy cleanse, intention card reading, breathwork and meditation, a bespoke massage using garden-grown botanicals, a rose-and-cacao body wrap, and reflexology.
• Other journeys layer in a seaside Esperanza signature massage, an Augustinus Bader facial, or a GENEO 3-in-1 super facial, all followed by a seasonally inspired lunch at Cocina del Mar to complete the experience.
This all sits under Auberge’s collection-wide wellness platform, The Joy of Wellbeing, organized around four guiding principles—Awe, Connect, Excel and Nurture—that show up everywhere at Esperanza now, from sunrise yoga overlooking the Sea of Cortez to personalized strength and movement sessions in the newly upgraded, floor-to-ceiling-windowed fitness center.
It’s a genuinely different spa than the one I remember: less “resort menu,” more intentional ritual. If you’ve been to Esperanza before and skipped the spa, this is the year to go back.
Cliffside Dining at Cocina del Mar
Cocina del Mar—Esperanza's signature oceanfront restaurant—has been reborn as well, with an entirely new design and menu overlooking the crashing surf from its dramatic rocky promontory.
Executive Chef Raul Soto blends the Pacific's seafood with flavors inspired by Baja's mountains and desert, sourcing ingredients from local fishermen and farms the resort has partnered with for years.
The restaurant itself celebrates Baja craftsmanship through locally quarried stone, native woods, handmade textiles, and custom tableware created by regional artisans. An open exhibition kitchen and glowing wood-fired oven anchor the dining room, while the lantern-lit cocktail lounge invites guests to linger before descending onto the cascading oceanfront terraces.
Esperanza's "Food of Place" programming remains one of the resort's most memorable experiences. Cooking classes, tequila tastings, cocktail workshops and guest chef dinners provide a deeper connection to Baja's culinary traditions—available exclusively to resort guests.
Wellness Has a Social Side
This summer, Esperanza introduced one of its simplest new offerings—and perhaps one of its smartest: an invitation to slow down and spend unhurried time together.
Every Thursday evening, Mahjong & Margaritas takes over Las Estrellas, pairing custom Baja-inspired mahjong sets from The Mahjong Line with handcrafted margaritas and beginner-friendly instruction. Guests can also arrange private in-villa game nights featuring mahjong, backgammon or cards, accompanied by shareable menus.
It's a small addition, but it brings The Joy of Wellbeing's Connect pillar to life in the most natural way possible: meaningful connection, simply expressed.
Still Worth Leaving the Casita For
Beyond the spa and restaurant, Esperanza's greatest strengths remain unchanged.
Guests can snorkel, sail or fish on the Sea of Cortez, walk the resort's scenic three-mile trail, play championship golf or pickleball, or simply spend the day at one of four pools—including an adults-only infinity pool overlooking the ocean.
Those looking for adventure can venture inland through Auberge Adventures. One standout excursion explores the Sierra de la Laguna UNESCO Biosphere Reserve by premium Can-Am UTV, navigating remote riverbeds before hiking to hidden waterfalls and natural swimming pools—a memorable glimpse into Baja's rugged interior.
Whale watching, seasonal swims with whale sharks near La Paz, kayaking, dune excursions, and daily complimentary fitness classes—including beach boot camps, yoga, TRX and Zumba—round out the experience, alongside a running concierge for guests training while traveling.
The Bottom Line
What distinguishes Esperanza isn't simply its spectacular setting—it's how completely the resort delivers.
Guests can immerse themselves in an ambitious wellness program, dine at one of Cabo's finest cliffside restaurants, spend the afternoon golfing or playing pickleball, and end the evening over mahjong and margaritas without ever feeling that any one experience overshadows another.
Few luxury resorts in Los Cabos bring together wellness, dining, recreation and a genuine sense of place with such consistency. That's what continues to make Esperanza one of the best luxury wellness resorts in Cabo San Lucas.
Esperanza, an Auberge Resorts Collection property, sits within the private Punta Ballena community overlooking Land's End. Accommodations range from ocean-view casitas to expansive villas and haciendas, complemented by six restaurants, four pools, an award-winning spa, championship golf and pickleball, and an extensive menu of land and sea adventures.
