A Slower Way to Experience Amsterdam at The Dylan
There are plenty of terrific ways to fill a few days in Amsterdam, but The Dylan Amsterdam is making a case for doing almost the opposite.
Set along the Keizersgracht in the city's historic canal district, the 41-room hotel occupies a site with its own remarkable history: Amsterdam's first stone theatre once stood here. Today, the property unfolds from the canal into a quiet inner courtyard, creating an unexpectedly secluded retreat in the middle of the city.
This fall, The Dylan is leaning further into that sense of place with Fall Within, a new experience designed around discovering a quieter, more layered side of Amsterdam. Rather than moving from one major attraction to the next, guests are encouraged to explore the city's architecture, craftsmanship, history and lesser-known spaces at a slower pace—the kind of travel that can leave you feeling better than when you arrived.
Beyond Amsterdam's Best-Known Sights
Start with a personally curated heritage walk through the surrounding canal district, and an audio experience that tells the story of The Dylan itself, tracing the property from its beginnings as a 17th-century theatre to the hotel it is today.
The experience also introduces guests to some of the people and places that give the neighborhood its character. Just minutes from the hotel, Amsterdam gallerist and mirror restorer Anouk Beerents works with antique mirrors, preserving pieces that reflect centuries of craftsmanship. One of her restored mirrors hangs above the fireplace at The Dylan's Bar Brasserie OCCO.
Even some of Amsterdam's better-known cultural institutions can be experienced differently through this lens. The Cuypers Library at the Rijksmuseum, with its soaring bookcases and intricate architectural details, offers another glimpse into the city's artistic and intellectual history.
A Hotel With Its Own Sense of Place
Back at The Dylan, that connection to Amsterdam continues. Guests can settle beside the fireplace at OCCO or dine at two-Michelin-starred Restaurant Vinkeles, tucked inside a restored 18th-century bakery.
The hotel's intimate scale is part of the appeal. The individually designed rooms and suites feel more like a quiet retreat than a traditional hotel, while still putting guests in the heart of the canal district.
Wellness, Without Leaving the City Behind
The Dylan may not be our typical wellness hotel, but it takes a thoughtful approach to two basics that can make a huge difference when traveling: movement and sleep. This spring, the hotel added a new Technogym fitness facility, making it easier for guests to keep up with their regular workouts while away.
Sleep gets attention, too. Several suites feature FreshBed climate-controlled mattresses that allow each sleeper to adjust the temperature independently, along with blackout curtains and sound insulation designed to create a quieter sleep environment. It's an approach we previously explored in our story on (how luxury hotels are rethinking sleep).
The location lends itself naturally to movement, too. From the hotel, guests can explore the canal district on foot, wander through nearby galleries and studios or enjoy an evening walk along the canals after dinner.
Together, these fit into the larger appeal of The Dylan. Wellness doesn't need to become the focus of the stay; instead, it's quietly built into the experience, from exploring Amsterdam on foot to having a comfortable place to return to afterward.
